The Popular Gypsy Jazz Festival Will Feature Musicians From Across The World
DjangoVegas! returns to downtown Las Vegas Saturday, June 17, at the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St, from 6 to 9 p.m. In its sixth year, the festival will celebrate the music of Django Reinhardt and other gypsy jazz musicians, and will feature The Django Festival All-Stars, the The John Jorgenson Ensemble and The Hot Club of Las Vegas. Tickets are priced at $20 per person.
The Django Festival All-Stars are some of the best players to emerge from gypsy jazz festivals. The group, based in France and led by guitar master Dorado Schmidt, has sold out shows in New York and performed at the Newport Jazz Festival. They will make their Las Vegas debut at DjangoVegas! as part of a summer tour that also includes the Playboy Jazz Festival and performances in Berkley, Chicago and New York City.
Known as “the U.S. Ambassador of Gypsy Jazz,” master musician John Jorgenson will return to the festival with his ensemble. The Grammy Award-winning artist has been praised for his guitar performance by Elton John, Peter Frampton, Bob Dylan and more. Attendees can expect the legacy of Reinhardt to be honored with Jorgenson’s artistry and own style of gypsy jazz.
Local gypsy jazz band and festival alumni, The Hot Club of Las Vegas, will return to DjangoVegas! The band performs original compositions as well as those of other musicians past and present, including boleros, flamenco rhumbas, tangos, waltzes and more. The group, comprised of Mundo Juillerat, Noybel Gorgoy, Christopher Davis, and Johnny Miles, frequently play shows in the Las Vegas valley.
Cocktail service will begin at 5 p.m. and the event will feature pre-concert entertainment by the Django Shredders, two guitarists combining traditional gypsy jazz with elements of modern jazz. For information and tickets, visit lasvegasnevada.gov/djangovegas or call 702-229-ARTS (2787).
