|Councilwoman Thelda Williams partnered with Cigna today and distributed lunch boxes and backpacks filled with school supplies including binders, spiral notebooks, crayons and markers to more than 100 new refugee children. The supplies will help them prepare for the new school year, which begins on Monday.
“Cigna wants to do our part to improve the lives and sense of security of people in our community where we live and work,” saidLisa Jachowicz, Arizona Marketing Lead for Cigna. “We are happy to help provide some of the supplies students need to be prepared for the upcoming school year.”
Refugee families from 28 countries, speaking 40 languages who fled war, persecution and conflict have been resettled at the Phoenician Palms Apartments. Working with a case manager, they often arrive from the airport with very little or nothing to prepare them for their new life.
“Connecting with one another is key to a strong and vibrant community,” said Councilwoman Williams, in whose district the Phoenician Palms is located. “I greatly appreciate Cigna’s generous backpack donation as this will go a long way in helping our refugees begin a new life in peace.”
The backpacks and lunchboxes were provided by Blessings in a Backpack, a national child hunger relief non-profit, which is supported nationally and locally by the Cigna Foundation and Cigna.
