Councilwoman Mendoza’s Statement on National Police Foundation Report on Officer-Involved Shootings Study

“Last June, the Phoenix City Council heard the communities concerns about the higher-than-normal rates of officer-involved shootings and commissioned a study to examine the reasoning behind the rise. The National Police Foundation, an independent non-partisan, non-profit organization was selected to conduct the study and this morning their report on the issue was released.

The report did not reveal any single issue or easy reason why the rise occurred. The report did provide nine recommendations to better improve accountability and transparency within the Phoenix Police Department to help build a trusting relationship with the residents of our city. Accountability was the most important issue confirmed within the study and we must work with the community to ensure they have faith in our police department. Other issues at the forefront of the report were the impact of mental illness in our community and the need for increased training and technology for our police officers. I support the recommendations found in the analysis and ask they be implemented immediately.

I want to thank Police Chief Jeri Williams for taking the initiative in calling for this study within the police department. I also want to thank the community members and police officers who participated in the study.”
