LINCOLN, NE – Following Monday night’s Lincoln City Council hearing regarding requiring gun owners to keep their guns locked in their homes, Councilwoman Cyndi Lamm made the following statement:
“I understand many present Monday night had experienced personal tragedies involving firearms – their hearts were in the right place. As elected officials, it is our obligation to thoroughly assess the big picture and due diligence with regards to any policy or enacting an ordinance. Experience has shown us from the past that the Lincoln City Council has enacted some ordinances that fell under constitutional challenges. This area is one where we really need to do our due diligence and make sure we are addressing the real issue. There hasn’t been enough investigation or process regarding this particular issue. A townhall style outcry about whatever topic from one group or another on either side should not result in law without due diligence regarding policy and potential consequences.
The most important issue that confronts us every day is how to keep our citizens, our cities, and our communities safe. That is our number one priority, and it is our sacred obligation. It’s critical that our efforts to reduce the threat of gun violence keeps in line with the Constitution and the laws passed by Congress.”
