Clucking and Mooing at Chick-fil-A

More than 3 million Facebook users were invited to participate in ??????Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day?????? on Wednesday, August 1st, as a response to the call-for-boycott backlash from Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy????????s remarks affirming that he believed the Biblical view of marriage should be upheld. More than 671,000 Facebookers responded that they were ??????going?????? and over 64,000 responded ??????maybe??????. The Facebook event was created by (or at least appears to have been created by) Mike Huckabee.

News reports from around the country tell of long lines at Chick-fil-A restaurants on August 1st, and the Layton Chick-fil-A on Antelope Drive was no exception. One employee said, ??????We expected about a 30% increase in business that day, but it was off the wall. Completely off the wall.??????

A manager told me, ??????It was the busiest day we????????ve ever had here.?????? Interestingly enough, the morning of August 2nd brought a continued increase in business–and protestors expressing their disapproval of Cathy????????s remarks. According to the staff, the protestors didn????????t slow down business one iota. The excitement finally died down, and by afternoon on August 2nd, business was back to normal.

Customer Michael Walker voiced firmly his opinion on the subject as he ate his food inside the restaurant. ??????Simply put, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, as long as they don????????t infringe on others. If the Cathy family is going to build their business on their Biblical beliefs, they should be allowed to do that. They worked very hard to become successful. I was here yesterday to support them and I????????m here again today.??????

The photo of the brown cow published here is only faintly reminiscent of Chick-fil-A????????s clever advertising that portrays black and white cows with hand-painted (hoof-painted?) signs urging customers to eat chicken, not beef. On the occasional Chick-fil-A sponsored ??????Cow Appreciation Day??????, customers are encouraged to dress up like cows to be rewarded with free ??????chikin??????.

Those days are lots of fun and bring in extra business (hey, the chicken at Chck-fil-A is reliably consistent and delicious–worth dressing up for!) but the numbers are nothing compared to the turnout for ??????Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day.??????
