Residents encouraged to know risk for local hazards, get ready and stay informed
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — In an effort to increase awareness for wildfire, flash flooding and emergency preparedness in the community the City of Colorado Springs will host two community meetings:
Wednesday, April 11 or Tuesday, May 8
6:30 – 8 p.m. 6:30 – 8 p.m.
Howbert Elementary School Broadmoor Elementary School
Officials from the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the Colorado Springs Police Department and the Office of Emergency Management will lead these discussions.
Specific topics include:
· Spring-Summer 2018 Forecast (National Weather Service-Pueblo)
· Waldo Canyon Fire Burn Scar Recovery
· Flood Mitigation Along Waldo Burn Scar
· Reducing the Wildfire Risk
· Evacuation Planning: Ready, Set, Go
Several organizations will host booths and displays to provide information on a variety of topics related to emergency preparedness and natural hazards.
“In recent years Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak Region have experienced both wildfire and flash flooding that have devastated parts of our community, and should keep us all mindful that we continue to live with the threat of wildfire and the aftermath of flash flooding,” said Kevin Madsen, Colorado Springs Office of Emergency Management deputy director. “With continued dry conditions anticipated through the summer, this meeting serves to inform residents of the risk for these local hazards and provide information and resources to prepare their family and property in the event they may need to leave their homes due to an emergency.”
In addition to attending the community meeting, residents are encouraged to download the City’s Emergency Preparedness and Safety Guide for information on how to prepare for wildfire, flash flooding and all types of emergencies.
