(Miami, FL January 11, 2017) – On Friday, January 13th, 2017, at 4:00 p.m. the City of Miami will open the new Samuel K. Johnson Youth Center located at Hadley Park, 1300 N.W. 50th Street.
City officials welcome the public to come participate in the ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of the newly constructed 22,000 square foot building.
“The Samuel K. Johnson Youth Center is the newest beacon of light for our children. I am honored to have played a role in the construction of the facility and preservation of Samuel K. Johnson’s legacy,” stated City of Miami Commission Chairman Keon Hardemon.
The Samuel K. Johnson Youth Center hosts an indoor basketball gym, exercise room with lockers and restrooms, classrooms, meeting rooms, a computer room, office space, storage and a concession area. The lobby and reception area interconnect with a newly covered drop-off area for the existing Senior Center building, ADA reconstruction of the parking areas of the recreation building and field parking lot, pavement marking, signage, ADA concrete ramps and improvements in the Carrie Meek Center. A new shaded playground designed for children ages 2 -12 equipped with a rubberized play surface was installed as well.
The new youth center was named in honor of Samuel “Coach Sam” Johnson by the City Commission on November 19th, 2015. Coach Sam was a co-founder of the Liberty City Optimist Club, coach and mentor in the Liberty City community who passed away in 2011.
Cost for design and construction totaled $6,330,081.08 with funding from Homeland Defense Bonds, Impact Fees and the Sunshine State Financing Commission. ABC Construction, Inc. in conjunction with Rizo Carreno & Partners, Inc. served as the design firm.
After the ribbon cutting guests are invited to stay for a facility tour, program, and basketball game featuring attendees of Lenora B. Smith Elementary, Georgia Jones Ayers Middle School and the Liberty City Optimist Club Cheerleaders and Basketball team. Sneakers are required to access the indoor basketball gym.
