City Of Las Vegas Celebrates Arbor Day April 29 With Tree Planting

Matt Kelly Elementary School Students To Participate At Kianga Isoke Palacio Park At Doolittle Complex At 9 A.M.

The city of Las Vegas will celebrate Arbor Day 2021 at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 29, at Kianga Isoke Palacio Park at Doolittle Complex with tree planting and an educational program for fifth-grade students of Matt Kelly Elementary School. Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear will host a program that will include Cayenne Engel from the Nevada Division of Forestry, city of Las Vegas Parks & Recreation Director Greg A. Weitzel, and faculty and students of Matt Kelly Elementary. See map for location of tree planting in the park, north of the corner of J Street and Eleanor Avenue.

Councilman Crear will present an Arbor Day proclamation to Matt Kelly Elementary School Principal Jerrell Hall.

Director Weitzel will present the Tree City USA flag to Matt Kelly Elementary School Principal Hall. This year marks the 29th consecutive year the city of Las Vegas has been honored with a Tree City USA flag by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to maintaining and increasing the urban forest.

Cayenne Engel from the Nevada Division of Forestry will present a brief educational program on trees.

The elementary school students are preparing a time capsule to plant with three Shumard Oak trees. Matt Kelly Elementary School Assistant Principal Angela Mathis will introduce the fifth-grade classes of teachers Dai’Janai Yarber, Vishe Redmond and Lynette Sneed, and explain the contents of the time capsule. City of Las Vegas Urban Forester Brad Daseler will assist the children in positioning their time capsule and planting the trees.
