Farmington, NM: During Tuesday night’s regular city council meeting, Mayor Nate Duckett recognized City Manager Rob Mayes for being named New Mexico Municipal League’s City Manager of the Year.
Rob Mayes has been employed with the City of Farmington for over twelve years; serving more than 10 of those years as City Manager. Rob manages the fourth largest municipal budget in the state of New Mexico, and leads the largest city within the Farmington Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As the City of Farmington’s City Manager, Rob oversees a total budget of over $ 287 million, and leads an employee base of roughly 778. Since September of 2011,Rob has been an ICMA Credentialed City Manager, a member of the New Mexico City Manager’s Association, and serves on the Hospital Community Board of Directors, as an Ex-Officio member of the Farmington Chamber ofCommerce, and is on the Executive Board of Directors for Four Corners Economic Development, Inc.
Rob has been recognized for successfully leading the municipality through the economic decline of 2009, and for continuing to forecast and manage the City’s operations with caution, conservatism, and clarity. As a result of Rob’s leadership, the City has endured a nearly nineteen percent reduction in gross receipts tax (GRT) income without employee layoffs, furlough workdays, or significant cuts to services to the community.
Rob was also recognized for his extraordinary skills in strategic planning, crisis management, community collaboration, and for his mind-set of accountability in government.
Finally, New Mexico Municipal League recognized Rob for continuously demonstrating outstanding leadership; building a dynamic, high-functioning team that leads the municipality with great respect and award-winning work; and for his tireless efforts in improving the quality of life for the residents of Farmington and the surrounding communities.
Honored by the recognition during council, Rob respectfully noted, "I am honored to have received this recognition. However, any recognition or success we have achieved has been done as a team. I have had the privilege to serve at the discretion of three great mayors–Mayor Bill Standley, Mayor Tommy Roberts, and now Mayor Nate Duckett. This community has benefited from many years of solid elected city leadership at all levels creating stability, setting policy, and providing direction to our community. We also have the best team of department heads and city employees that anyone could possibly have the privilege to partner with. And, I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the quality and dedication of volunteers and community stakeholders that make the private sector thrive adding to the ultimate success of our community.”
Rob’s final note to the members of the council, his staff, and the community members was, “I love serving as the city manager of this outstanding community and personally remain fully engaged and highly motivated because our best years as a city and region are still ahead."
