The New Mexico State University “A” Mountain Staff Award gives well deserved recognition to an NMSU staff member who demonstrates the core values of diversity and inclusion, accountability, excellence, discovery and engagement.
The fall 2018 award honored NMSU-Alamogordo Arts and Sciences Administrative Assistant Maria Theresa Chavez. She was presented this award by NMSU President John Floros at the annual Employee Appreciation Picnic Oct. 19.
“I feel very honored,” said Chavez. “It’s a great feeling to be recognized for many years of dedicated work and service. Although, I know there are many employees more deserving of this award, and I want them to know that, in my heart, this recognition is shared with them. I give all the glory to God.”
Chavez has worked at NMSU for nearly 20 years. She began her work in 1995 as a temporary employee in the Accounts Receivable Department, but left the next year due to a financial freeze. She returned to NMSU in 1999 and has since worked in Cooperative Extension Services, the Entomology, Plant Pathology and Weed Science Department, as well as the Leyendecker and Fabian Garcia Research Centers. She also is an NMSU alumna.
“I’m proud to be an Aggie,” said Chavez. “My favorite part of working at NMSU are the benefits of continuous education; the people I work with; the great friends I have made along the way; and the good feeling of accomplishment.”
Chavez relocated to the Arts and Sciences Division at the NMSU-Alamogordo branch in 2013 after marrying her husband, Frank.
In her free time, she enjoys reading her bible, spending time with family, cook-outs, scouting and hunting with her husband, painting and crafting. She is looking forward to continuing to work over the next three years, after which she will retire.
“I have developed many skills and am still learning, day-by-day, throughout my career,” said Chavez. “I’ve worked with wonderful people who have mentored me, been there for me, and have become dear, life-long friends.”
