Charges Upgraded Against Suspects in Fatal Shooting Incident in Second District

NEW ORLEANS – The NOPD today (Sept. 19, 2018) has upgraded charges against the two male juveniles arrested in a shooting incident that occurred on September 9, 2018 near the intersection of Hamilton & Edinburgh streets, after one of the victims has died.

At about 8 p.m. on September 19, NOPD Second District officers responded to the area in response to an aggravated battery by shooting call. Upon arrival, officers discovered one juvenile female with a gunshot wound to the head and one adult male victim with gunshot wounds to the leg and arm. Both were transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Arrested on September 18 in connection with this incident were a 16-year-old juvenile male (DOB: 07-10-2002) and a 15-year-old juvenile male (DOB: 01-28-2003), charged at that time with aggravated battery by shooting.

The 16-year-old female victim in this incident was pronounced dead today (September 19, 2018) at an area hospital. With this development, charges against the two juvenile suspects have been upgraded to one count each of second-degree murder.

“The shooting on Hamilton was a tragic incident, that has now claimed the precious life of yet another teenager and irreparably scarred the lives of many others; her family in particular, who my heart goes out to,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “I applaud our NOPD officers for their swift action and relentless focus on solving acts of gang violence, and I look forward to seeing justice done. This violence in our community is unacceptable and it cannot be tolerated.

“We will push for stronger results and redouble our commitment to taking on violent crime as a public health matter, and dedicate all our resources to curing the problem.”
