Carrollton, Texas – Whether you’re in to everything Texas, enjoy listening to concerts and movies under the stars, like to strut with your four-legged companion, or are a seasoned Jedi with a young apprentice in tow, Downtown Carrollton’s (1106 S. Broadway Street) free events mean fun-filled times for just about everyone from March through May.
TEXFest, Saturday, March 3, 3-9 p.m.
Starting with TEXFest, Texas Independence Day Celebration, Carrollton’s third annual festival features craft beer and local artists like Grant Gilbert and Southern rock group The Jimmy Lee Jordan Band, to warm up the crowd before The Black Lillies take the stage for an evening of music under the stars.
Concerts on the Square, Saturday, March 24 and April 14, 6-8 p.m.
If TEXFest is not enough fun, food, and music for you, Carrollton is hosting two more outdoor concerts in the downtown area. Justin Philip Brooks will bring his Texas Country to the Square on Saturday, March 24, 6-8 p.m., and evoke the familiar comfort of front porch swings and the deep woods of his Southeast Texas roots. He uses his skills as an accomplished songwriter to artfully explore the traditions of folk, gospel, and country.
On Saturday, April 14, 6-8 p.m., the group Ashmore will take you back to the British and Southern rock roots that once made rock ‘n roll great. Since debuting in the summer of 2004, Ashmore has shared the stage with a number of great rock superstars including Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, The Guess Who, Nickelback, Molly Hatchet, and Warrant. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs to enhance your listening experience. Food trucks will be available for both concerts to satisfy the hungriest of music lovers.
Movies on the Square, Saturday, April 21 and May 26, at Sunset
For a quieter evening, Carrollton is showing two movies on the Square this season. The first, Sing (2016) PG on Saturday, April 21, stars Buster Moon (voiced by Academy Award-winner Matthew McConaughey), a dapper Koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. His vision brings a mouse, a timid elephant, a pig, a gorilla, and a punk-rock porcupine, as five unlikely contestants in the world’s greatest singing competition to bring back the life of his crumbling theater.
Then, on May 26, who can resist those mischievous minions in Despicable Me 3 (2017) PG. See if Gru and his long-lost, charming, cheerful, and more successful twin brother, Dru, can team up for one last criminal heist to defeat a former 1980s child star who seeks revenge against the world.
Paws on the Square, Saturday, April 7, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Bring the family and the dog to Carrollton’s third annual Paws on the Square event. It’s free and brings people, pets, animal welfare organizations, and pet-friendly companies together to make Carrollton a better place for our furry friends. The day brings opportunities for adoptions, pet owner education, shopping, activities, and of course playtime on the Downtown Square. Low cost vaccinations will be provided by Texas Coalition for Animal Protection from 12-2 p.m. All dogs must have ID tags, be on a leash at all times, have current rabies vaccination or come to take advantage of the low cost vaccination, and be accompanied by a human 18 years of age or older.
“May the 4th Be With You” Star Wars Event, Friday, May 4, 6-9 p.m.
In a galaxy not so far away, Downtown Carrollton will honor Star Wars Day with a free event on the Square. Come in costume to enjoy Star Wars-themed booths, activities, and photo opportunities followed by a free screening of a “Star Wars” movie.
