Arapahoe Avenue detour changes to begin evening of July 24

Travel direction will switch to eastbound and new detours will be in effect for all travelers

Beginning July 24 after the evening commute, the direction of vehicle travel on Arapahoe Avenue between Broadway and 17th Street will shift from westbound to eastbound only. Westbound traffic will be redirected to Canyon Boulevard or University Avenue at 17th Street. With reconstruction of the eastbound travel lanes completed, this change in direction will allow motorists to travel on the new pavement and ensure a safer travel experience for all users. Pedestrians and bicyclists traveling along Arapahoe Avenue will be directed to the new sidewalk on the south side of Arapahoe.

The intersection of 13th Street and Arapahoe Avenue will also be closed starting July 24, with a temporary on-street crossing east of 13th pedestrians and cyclists. To access 13th Street by car, motorists will follow a detour to 14th Street and then through the alley west of 14th Street from Canyon Boulevard. Additional intersection closures may also occur in the coming weeks throughout the project area, and signage will be posted for detours.

Multi-use path detours in the Central Park area continue to be in effect, and the JUMP bus will continue to be detoured to Canyon Boulevard.

Access to businesses, residences and the Farmers Market will remain open throughout construction.

The Arapahoe Avenue Reconstruction project will replace deteriorated asphalt with concrete and improve walking, biking and transit facilities for a safer and more accessible travel experience for all users. The project will also include landscaping and replacing underground water utilities and the underpass at 13th St. and Arapahoe Avenue. The new underpass will increase visibility, meet accessibility requirements and be less prone to flooding.

Arapahoe Avenue street reconstruction is on schedule and anticipated to be substantially completed by the time incoming freshman start at Boulder High School on Aug. 15. However, ongoing work on the reconstruction of the underpass at Arapahoe near 13th Street will result in intermittent lane closures through early 2019.
