Aotearoa New Zealand is preparing to welcome the royal newly-weds, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, on their first official visit to the southern realms.
The four-day royal visit (28 October – 1 November) will be the last stop on a 16-day royal tour that also includes visits to Australia, Fiji and Tonga. It will be their first major tour outside the United Kingdom.
In New Zealand, their royal highnesses will visit the main cities of Wellington and Auckland, travel across Cook Strait to Abel Tasman National Park on the northern tip of the South Island, and Rotorua – the cultural and geothermal heart of the central North Island.
Welcoming confirmation of the visit from Kensington Palace, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she hoped that many New Zealanders would have the opportunity to see them.
“It’s wonderful news that the Duke and Duchess are coming to New Zealand as part of their first major tour outside the United Kingdom. I know they will receive a very warm Kiwi welcome wherever they go,” said Jacinda Ardern.
“I hope many New Zealanders will have the opportunity to see the Duke and Duchess as they visit some of our beautiful provinces and national parks, and experience our hospitality.
“I know Prince Harry really enjoyed his last visit here in 2015 and I’m sure New Zealanders will want the Duchess of Sussex to also experience our warm hospitality and manaakitanga on her first visit here as a member of the Royal family.
“This is the Duchess’s second visit to our country and I know New Zealanders will be very much looking forward to welcoming her back.”
The royal programme will focus on youth leadership, environmental and conservation efforts, and include the opportunity to meet several groups of young people and local charities.
The Duke and Duchess will arrive in Wellington on Sunday, 28 October and will visit Abel Tasman National Park on Monday, 29 October. They will visit Auckland on Tuesday, 30 October, and Rotorua on Wednesday, 31 October.
