Roosevelt Weeks of Houston has been appointed the new Director of the Austin Public Library. He will begin the position on September 11, 2017. Mr. Weeks was selected following a very competitive process.
Mr. Weeks joins Austin Public Library from the Houston Public Library (HPL), where he has been serving, most recently, as the Deputy Director of Administration overseeing the following units: Organizational Development, Financial Services, Fleet Inventory/Distribution Services, Digital Inclusion, and Community Engagement. He also managed a $40 million budget. Prior to that role, he served as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for the Houston Public Library. In his role as Chief Technology Officer for HPL, Mr. Weeks oversaw implementation of wireless connectivity and videoconferencing at all library locations, installation of a patron reservation system, and upgrading of computer technology.
Mr. Weeks is an active member of the Texas Library Association, American Library Association, Public Library Association, and Urban Libraries Council. Prior to joining HPL, he held management positions at Accenture and Aetna. He received his Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of North Texas and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science from Texas Southern University.
The previous Director of Libraries, Brenda Branch, retired on December 31, 2016 after nearly 40 years of dedicated service with the City of Austin.
