It is with deep sadness that I heard of the passing of former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. He spent his later years of retirement living quietly in Fort Lauderdale, enjoying our beach and even participating in the bridge club at Holiday Park. It was there that I had the honor of meeting him while presenting a proclamation to the club.
Justice Stevens represented the best in the American system of jurisprudence. He was an independent thinker who examined the cases before him with a deep degree of reason as well as respect for our Constitution and laws. He stood up for free speech and the rights of the accused. He also defended governments’ power to impose sensible gun regulations, and he fought the impact of big money in our elections.
His legacy on our country looms large, particularly at a time of such turmoil in our political system. My thoughts are with his family and friends. As the city of Fort Lauderdale, let us join together in mourning his passage.
