MAY 2016 ACTIVITIES AT THE OGDEN NATURE CENTER

Wild Wednesdays: Mother Nature

Free for ONC members
$3 children / $4 seniors / $5 adults
All ages welcome
Come celebrate Mother’s Day by looking at outstanding moms in nature. From the elephant who endures 22 months of pregnancy and gives birth to a 200 lb. baby to the mommy orangutan who nurses her baby for seven years! Bring your mother and explore the wonders of Mother Nature. Please meet in the Visitor Center.

Fly With The Flock 5K Trail Run

This 5K trail run is filled with fun surprises and topped off with a delicious pancake breakfast at the end of the run.  With options for a full 5k, a 2.5k for kids (12 and under) and for the littles — a 100 foot kids dash, the whole family can participate. Every little dasher (kids up to 12) will take home a tree-cookie running award. Union Grill will serve up breakfast and Grounds for Coffee will be filling the coffee & cocoa cups.  Come out and enjoy a spry spring morning at the Ogden Nature Center.

Cost:
$22 adults / $14 kids 12 and under.  After April 23: $27 adults / $16 kids
Day-of registration from 6:30 – 7:30 am (but limited to space available). The registration fee includes breakfast, a goodie bag, t-shirt, and prize drawing eligibility (goodie bags and t-shirts guaranteed to first 250 registered).  Extra breakfasts are only $7 each.

Important dates & times:
• Through April 23 — early registration.  Register online, by phone or in person.  Register by April 23 — to guarantee your t-shirt and goodie bag.
April 24 and after — late registration (late fees apply)  $27 adults / $16 kids
May 6 — registration packets may be picked up the day before the run at the Ogden Nature Center
May 7 – Trail Run! Day-of registration at 6:30 am / Run begins at 8 am

Wild Wednesdays: Nests and Nooks

All ages welcome
Birds make their homes high and low, in nests, in holes or on rocks. Explore the handiwork of nature’s feathered architects. Please meet in the Visitor Center.

Project Learning Tree
Wednesday, May 11, 6 – 9 pm
Cost: $35
For teachers of grades K-8
Engage your students with more than 96 hands-on interdisciplinary activities in the Project Learning Tree Environmental Education Activity Guide for grades K-8th grade. This activity-based teacher workshop offers opportunities to become comfortable teaching outdoors, while using nature to explore math, science, technology, reading, writing, and social studies. Participants should wear sturdy walking shoes and bring a lunch and water bottle. This workshop is eligible for Utah State office of Education re-licensure credits. Check out songbird’s social media as you learn how birds communicate. Listen to a songbird symphony along the trails as you learn to bird by ear. Please meet in the
Visitor Center.

Full Moon Hike
Saturday, May 21, 8 – 9:30 pm
$8 members / $10 for non-members
All ages welcome
Join teacher/naturalist Kristin Cluskey for an evening of nocturnal creatures and night-time fun. This is a great hike to take with kids as the full moon will provide plenty of light. Bring good walking shoes and remember to dress for the weather. Please RSVP by Friday, May 20 to 801-621-7595.

Scout Saturdays
Saturday, May 21
9 am – Native vs. Invasive
10 am – Conservation
11 am – Venomous Reptiles and Poisonous Plants
$5 per scout / per class
The Ogden Nature Center provides the perfect outdoor classroom for scout activities. Have our teacher/naturalists help your scout pass off badge requirements during these 45 minute mini classes. Reservations and a non-refundable deposit is required. Did you know that the Bald Eagle had to compete with the turkey to become our national symbol? It’s true!  Come to the Ogden Nature Center for a special Memorial Day program with Des Ta Te the Bald Eagle.  Come learn about these special birds and hear how they finally became our national symbol. This program will highlight some scout requirements. Please meet in the Visitor Center.
