Tarpon Fishing Featured on Next Episode of “Chasin’ the Sun”

Panama City Beach’s “Chasin’ the Sun” TV Show Honored at 38th Annual Telly Awards     PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla., April 18, 2017 – In the tenth episode of “Chasin’ the Sun” titled Tarpon Offense, veteran fly fisherman and former NFL offensive lineman Mark Cooper chases tarpon as they migrate through the Gulf waters off Panama City Beach. “Chasin’ the Sun,” a fishing and coastal lifestyle television show filmed in Panama City Beach, airs Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. EST / 7:30 a.m. CST on Destination America network, which reaches approximately 56 million U.S. households.

“Our clear water provides one of the most beautiful tarpon migration lanes in the world,” says President and CEO of Visit Panama City Beach Dan Rowe. “Still, most anglers don’t know that they can fish for ‘silver kings’ right off the coast of Panama City Beach.”

Mark Cooper spent his playing career on the offensive line of one of the NFL’s greatest teams. After a stellar career at the University of Miami, Cooper was selected in the second round of the 1983 NFL draft by the Denver Broncos. A few years later, he was the starting right guard in Super Bowl XXI and helped protect future Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway on football’s biggest stage. As his playing career was winding down in Tampa Bay, Cooper found a new passion: fly fishing for tarpon. In retirement, the only line he really cares about is the one with a tarpon on the other end.

In this week’s episode, Cooper joins local guide Steve Bachman to pursue these silver kings in Panama City Beach, where in peak season it’s not uncommon to spot up to a hundred of the prized gamefish making their way along the coast. And these fish are big: migrating tarpon are typically five to six feet in length and on average 70-120 pounds – enough to challenge even a veteran NFL star. The day ends with more tarpon action as host Capt. Justin Leake and angler Mark Fisher enjoy the saltwater acrobatics of one of America’s premier gamefish.

“Chasin’ the Sun” is produced by Visit Panama City Beach with support from sponsors including national brands such as AFTCO, Yo-Zuri, MarineMax, Sperry, Shimano and ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals.

The show will also air on NBC Sports Network in June 2017.
