Seattle City (spot)Light: Tosh Sharp

Tosh Sharp has been at City Light since 2007. He began his career at the utility as a customer service representative before being accepted into the Lineworker Apprenticeship Program. “I currently serve in the Streetlight department by literally keeping the lights on for you,” Tosh explained. “My day to day activities include troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining the lighting in the greater Seattle area.”

Tosh lived in Hawaii and California before making his way to Washington state. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Central Washington University. Tosh also completed City Light’s apprenticeship program – the other four-year degree – to become a Journeyman Lineman. Aside from his duties as a lineworker, he’s also been involved in improving the utility’s safety culture by participating in City Light’s Grassroots Safety program.

In this week’s (spot)Light, Tosh talks about his hobbies and shares what he enjoys about City Light.

Tosh, Sugar and Jennifer

“I was born in Hawaii and grew up in Los Angeles. I was a teenager when my father moved us to the greener pastures of Washington. I’ve called the Pacific Northwest home ever since; it’s one of the best decisions my father ever made. But I still root for my LA Teams – Go Raiders, Lakers and Dodgers!”

“I live in Tukwila; it’s a vibrant city full of diversity and opportunity. My family and I love it here. In fact, I love it so much that I’m currently running for Tukwila City Council. With my new pastime of campaigning, I get to meet different people in my neighborhood daily. Tukwila offers all the perks of a small town but is still very close to Seattle. It’s a hidden gem.”

“My favorite activity is raising my one-year old son, Sugar, with my fiancé Jennifer. I also serve my community by volunteering to help the homeless and the less fortunate citizens in our city. I also enjoy finding new ways to improve relations between the Tukwila Police Department and the people of Tukwila by serving on COPCAB, the community policing board.”

“City Light is a wonderful company that offers plenty of opportunity, a diverse work group and a place that provides a livable wage and great benefits. It’s the best company I’ve ever worked for. The friends and people that I’ve met here are second to none. Coming to work is a pleasure and the chance to serve the Seattle area residents makes my job even better. To me, there is no better collection of people within an organization or Seattle for that matter. Seattle City Light can be described in one word—Family.”
