Portneuf River Cleanup Set for August 17

The Portneuf River is set to get its annual bath on Saturday, August 17.

Starting at 10 a.m., citizens are invited to join in the Portneuf River Cleanup. Volunteers will be picking up debris and trash that have collected on the banks of and in the river over the last year.

“If you enjoyed floating the Portneuf River at the Poky Portneuf Paddle, we could use your help to make the Portneuf River more floatable,” said Hannah Sanger, Science and Environment Division Administrator with the City of Pocatello. “There are still places where there are debris jams but thanks to the efforts of volunteers, the Portneuf looks better and better every year.”

This year, volunteers will be working between Raymond Park and the J.R. Simplot Company Plant as well as between Edson Fichter Nature Area and Centennial Park. Interested volunteers are asked to meet at the Pacific Recycling Trailhead (on North Main, just north of Kraft Road where the Greenway Trail ends) and bring their own work gloves. Waders and water shoes are also very helpful. Those who plan on bringing or using a City provided raft or canoe are asked to contact Hannah Sanger at hsanger to help better coordinate the effort and ensure volunteers have a properly fitted life jacket.

The cleanup will finish around noon.

The annual event is a shared effort between the City of Pocatello, Idaho State University’s Stream Ecology Center, Portneuf Watershed Partnership, and Portneuf Valley Partners.
