New fire pumper goes into service in Handley

fire truckEngine 24 is stationed at 3101 Forrest Ave.

Firefighters on the east side of Fort Worth dedicated the first of three new Pierce Velocity PUC pumpers into service.

Engine 24 was placed into service on Aug. 8 with a traditional washing and “push in” ceremony. And within five minutes of being in its new quarters, Engine 24 rushed away on its inaugural run, a medical call on the east side.

Assistant Chief Landon Stallings said the dedication ceremony is the start of a new tradition that allows firefighters to pay homage to retiring rigs while preparing new ones for upcoming service.

The new pumper has a 450-horsepower Cummins L9 engine and can pump up to 1,500 gallons per minute. The 750-gallon tanks hold both foam and water.

Engine 24 consistently remains in the top five for response volume and is on pace to make 5,000 runs in 2019.
