National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament To Highlight Local Athletes

Admission Free To Event At UNLV Feb. 18 And 19

 

New Las Vegas city logoThe public is invited to a free wheelchair basketball tournament on Saturday, Feb. 18, and Sunday, Feb. 19, at the University of Nevada Las Vegas McDermott MPE Building Gyms, located at 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

 

The national tournament features the local Las Vegas Yuccas and teams from across the Western United States. The tournament is sponsored by the city of Las Vegas Adaptive Recreation Program, UNLV, the Nevada chapter of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, Invacare and other community partners.

 

The tournament features games beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, with additional games throughout the day. Saturday’s competition ends at 7 p.m.and Sunday the tournament will conclude at 2 p.m. Spectators should enter the university by taking Swenson street to Harmon Avenue on the west side of the school.

 

In addition to fast-paced basketball action, on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. UFC Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrandt will be at the tournament signing autographs.

 

The city of Las Vegas offers a variety of adaptive recreation programs, including Project D.I.R.T (outdoor adventure experiences and fishing clinics); F.L.O.A.T (private swim lessons and aquatic therapy); G.O.L.F. (seasonal golf lessons, including adaptive golf carts); Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (low-impact, gentle range-of-motion group exercise program); Paralympic Sports Club Las Vegas (wheelchair sports training and competitions); and several more programs.

 

The city provides equipment, coaching and grants for this nationally recognized program that is widely used by veterans, families and children throughout the community.
