Governor Herbert Declares July 9th through the 15th “Golf’s Championship Week in Utah” Viewed 42,035 times

Two nationally televised golf tournaments in Utah this week
Salt Lake City (July 9, 2012) – Governor Gary R. Herbert has signed a declaration proclaiming the week of July 9th through the 15th as ‘Golf’s Championship Week in Utah’ and will read the declaration publicly this Wednesday at the Web.com Tour’s Utah Championship. Two nationally televised tournaments are in Utah this week, starting with the USGA Amateur Public Links Championship being held at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, and the Web.com Tour’s Utah Championship being played at Willow Creek Country Club in Sandy. Both events will be broadcast on Golf Channel, providing Utah with unprecedented golf coverage and exposure.
Utah’s only official PGA Tour event, the Utah Championship will be held at Willow Creek Country Club. Formerly part of the Nationwide Tour and now named the Web.com Tour, the Utah Championship features players from all over the country as well as international players vying for over $500,000 in prize money and for ranking status as they play to advance to the PGA Tour. The Utah Championship will be aired live on Golf Channel starting Thursday, July 12th and through the final round on Sunday, July 15th.
“The competitive golf world turns its attention to Utah this week with two prominent events, which will showcase Utah’s unique golf landscape and capabilities. We are appreciative of the USGA choosing Soldier Hollow for the Public Links Championship and are of course honored to host the Web.com Tour’s Utah Championship once again," said Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission. "The combined exposure on the Golf Channel, seen internationally, is over 22 hours.”
The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship is the first USGA Championship held in Utah and is the 87th championship for the USGA’s Amateur Public Links. The field is comprised of players from around the country who have qualified in local or regional championships. The winner of this championship gets an automatic invitation to play in next year’s Masters Tournament and will receive a 10-year exemption to the USGA Amateur Public Links Championship. The event will be tape-delayed broadcast on Golf Channel across the country.
Deena Loyola of the Utah State Parks and Recreation, the host organization of the Public Links Championship, emphasized the unique history and honor of hosting the USGA Amateur Public Links Championship. “This is the 87th Publinks Championship and the first one to be held in Utah. It is one of the longest running golf championships in the world and is a key component in helping grow the amateur game across the country. We are honored to host it at a Utah State Park and for golfers from around the country see what Utah has to offer,” said Loyola.
With over 116 golf courses throughout the state, Utah has one of the highest correlations of golf courses per capita. Almost 4 million rounds of golf were played last year in Utah, which by comparison is on par with total skier days in Utah. Golf is a prominent sport in the state and represents significant economic impact. With both events being televised, the exposure that both tournaments can bring to bolster Utah’s golf tourism is substantial.
Governor Herbert, an avid golfer, will read the declaration this Wednesday, July 11th at Willow Creek Country Club at approximately 1:30 p.m. The event is open to the media and general public.
