My husband served in the US Air Force for 21 years. He spent five months in Iraq, some of which was in full view of the enemy, inspecting aircraft wreckage to determine whether or not it had been shot down. My nephew, a US soldier, was blown up by a suicide bomber in Iraq. His injuries were horrific; he is lucky to be alive. More than 60 people standing near him were killed.
My dad served in the US Navy in Japan during the Korean War. My grandpa served in the US Army in World War II.
My son serves in a different kind of “military”. He is a policeman, a firefighter and an EMT here at home, on American soil. He is grossly underpaid. All too often, he loses a comrade-in-arms and friend in the line of duty. All too often, he is disrespected, treated with disdain, called names, even attacked. When I asked him why he became a firefighter (wasn’t being a policeman enough?), he said, “I wanted people to start waving at me using all five fingers.” It's an old joke, but a sobering reminder of how too many people view police officers, stereotyping them as corrupt power mongers. In fact, most police officers are honest, hardworking, courageous public servants who, like firefighters, literally put themselves in harm's way to protect the rest of us.
Me? I reap the benefits of living in this free country. I am not in harm's way. I am safe.
I am grateful.
