There is always something exciting going on in the northern Utah valley called Cache. It is a cache of outdoor and indoor fun and activities. Biking, hiking, kayaking, running, skiing, snowshoeing, boating, opera, theater, musicals, bands, and other forms of world class entertainment seem to flock to Cache Valley.
In the summer the emerald valley, surrounded by breathtaking mountains is home to many a race. The Top of Utah Marathon (see: http://www.topofutahmarathon.com/index.php) provides events for runners. Little Red Riding Hood (http://www.littlered2012.blogspot.com/), the Gran Fondo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXMIbZr6Ynw, Logan to Jackson (http://www.lotojaclassic.com/main/index.html) all provide opportunities for biking enthusiasts.
Whether it's South, North, East or West there are beautiful, traffic free highways and byways to bike in Cache Valley. Where ever you are in the valley the views are breathtaking. There are canyons, hills, and flat areas to serve any biking level. Whatever you long for in biking, you can probably find it here.
The lakes, reservoirs, and rivers of Cache Valley and nearby areas provide kayaking, and boating opportunities second to none. My wife and I love kayaking in Tony's Grove lake, Bear Lake, Mantua Reservoir, the Benson Marina, Hyrum Reservoir, and Porcupine Reservoir.
The mountains surrounding Cache Valley provide hiking, camping, fishing, mountain biking, and climbing opportunities. Whether you want to rope in and scale cliffs, hike along a mountain stream, swim or fish in a mountain lake or camp in private, it's close at hand. World class mountain beauty greets the eye regardless of the path or campsite you choose.
The theaters, University (http://www.usu.edu/), Opera Company (http://www.ufoc.org/) provide stage plays, Broadway musicals, Shakespeare, world class opera featuring major talent, bands, rock and roll, country music, and a wide diversity of additional musical and cultural entertainment from around the world. It's as if everyone wants to perform in Cache Valley. Many of the musical events and other events are partially funded and/or subsidized by foundations and local governments. When my wife and I moved here from Portland we couldn't believe the events we were able to attend for $15 per head that would have easily cost $150 per head in Oregon. Not only that, parking is easy to find.
Over the Independence week the Cruise In () is a car show and parade that fills the fair grounds. Taken together with the fireworks in the stadium it makes for many a good memory.
The Beave (http://www.skithebeav.com/) is all the skiing fun a man my age can really handle. It has slopes for the advanced and the beginner. Back country powder skiing, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing are also widely available. Many a group spend their days exploring the back county on snowmobiles and skiis all winter long. The country is beautiful. The skiing is truly the best kept secret in Utah. It's relatively inexpensive and diverse.
My wife and I moved here ten years ago from Portland, Oregon hoping we would find a wonderland of hiking, biking, skiing, kayaking, exploring, and culture. We have found it all in great abundance. From this little epicenter of beauty in Northern Utah it's not far to visit YellowStone, Bryce Canyon, Zions, Canyonlands, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Park City, Salt Lake City, and dozens of other destinations worthy of your free hours. Visit Cache Valley, the Star of Northern Utah.
