Protect the Constitution Viewed 74,598 times

To the Editor:

In my view many of the issues this Nation is facing today are larger than partisan politics, parties, individuals, or elected officials. Many, if not most of the problems our Country is facing are a direct result of the drift we have allowed and supported away from the Constitution. Unfortunately, today constitutionality seems to be a forbidden topic, not well understood, or a radical position of discussion. I believe we need to return to the guiding principles of that document, and it is the role of "We The People" who are responsible to do it, not just our elected officials.

The founders spoke openly of the role of divine providence in the forming of the US Constitution. J. Reuben Clark, Jr., a prominent attorney of the Department of State and Under Secretary of State stated, "the Constitution of the United States as it came from the hands of the Framers with its coterminous Bill of Rights, makes of the principles of that document an integral part of my religious faith. It is a revelation from the Lord."
I believe one day we may have to answer to our God how we supported and befriended the principles of freedom contained in that document.

We must stop viewing the issues of this Nation in the light of our own self interest but in the interest of the Country with a constitutional perspective. An understanding of the proper role of government is also essential when judging what the proper function of government is or should be. It is the responsibility of every citizen to avoid being a "Sunshine Patriot" but to be knowledgable of the political process and its proper function.

President Ronald Reagan said, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."
 
It is time we hold our elected officials accountable for their actions. Our elected officials take an oath to support, obey and defend the Constitution of this land. It is time we become stewards of the God inspired Constitution and demand our elected leaders to follow it. It is not hard to see how this drifting away from those guidelines has led to inefficiency, a loss of liberty, and incredible debt.

There are many Countries facing collapse because of the oppressive hand of socialism. Socialism is communism lite, it is government ownership and control of all means of production and distribution in a community. It is collectivism not individualism where government is the granter of rights not God given inalienable rights. Government was instituted by man to protect our God given rights, not to be the guarantor of entitlements, bailouts or to redistribute wealth.

Government has a natural tendency to grow; and politicians get re-elected by granting favors from the public trust. It is our job to think critically about the issues facing this Nation from the proper perspective of constitutionalism and the proper role of government. We must be aware of the tendency of government to follow this path and resist it at all costs if we are to maintain our freedoms vouched safe by the Constitution.
