Utah Author makes a stand against a Worldwide Bully
Logan, UT – Each of us growing up remembers at least one bully. Sometimes we were the one that was the bully. How did you handle the situation; do you become a bigger bully, do you go to a teacher for help, or do you sit idly by waiting for it to end? B.K. Bostick of Kaysville, Utah has seen both ends of the bully not only as a child, but as an adult. As a 2007 graduate of Utah State University’s Psychology master’s program, B.K. has used his education to make a stand against a bully, in a good way.
Alyssa was recently diagnosed with meningioma brain cancer and rather than allowing this bully to win, she chose to fight. However, when you are standing up to a worldwide bully such as cancer, you need some help. B.K. was just the person Alyssa needed to help make her stand to cancer. How did he help? As a new and upcoming author, B.K. was in the process of preparing to launch his first book, Huber Hill and the Dead Man’s Treasure. As a concerned neighbor, B.K. worked it out with his publisher to donate 100% of the proceeds of the first two weeks of his book sales to Alyssa and her family. However, he didn’t stop there. He wanted to do more. “I remember experiences being bullied as a kid,” says B.K., in fact, he drew from those experiences for his book. B.K. mentioned a particular experience on the bus from school that readers can find in his book starring Huber as the one being bullied and Scott as the bully. For B.K., he says it is important to “root out those behaviors” when you can. The important thing is to still make a stand.
In his effort to help stand next to Alyssa, B.K. started thinking of ways to help. He first considered going to different businesses and having a carnival. As neighbors started to get wind of this, a committee was quickly formed and as it evolved, a “Treasure for Alyssa Fun Run” was created. Through their combined efforts and B.K.’s book sales, over $6,000 was raised for Alyssa and her family.
Today, Alyssa is doing well. B.K. talks about her coming over and babysitting his newborn infant despite the continued testing and procedures. She is doing well and thus far, with the combined help of B.K. and the local community, their stand against a worldwide bully is working.
When asked about doing something like this again, B.K. recalls his memories of working with the Boys and Girls Club of Salt Lake City. “It was there I got my start as an afterschool program teacher,” B.K. says, “I worked there to pay the bills while I was going to college.” With the Fall 2012 launch of his next book, Huber Hill and the Brotherhood of Coronado, he wants to do something for the Boys and Girls Club that helped him. If his stand with Alyssa against cancer is any indication of his determination, there is no doubt he will be able to stand with those children and help them.
