Local Farming CSA Sets Goal To Expand Viewed 184,999 times

For most farmers, the planting season is just beginning. But one farm in Provo has been growing crops since last fall.

The farm La Nay Ferme grows not just during normal farming months, but they aim at creating fresh and local food in Utah County on a year long basis.

Clinton Felsted is the creator of La Nay Ferme. From geothermal greenhouses to high tunnels, he used this past fall and winter to research and experiment with different techniques to find this year-long success.

Felsted said, “Who knows where this one farm will go and what happens with it. But I think it’d be wonderful if the community was very involved.”

The farm is using a concept called CSA, otherwise known as community supported agriculture. This allows the public to purchase a share of the farm and in return the owners will grow and deliver a bag of fresh produce to them on a weekly basis.

Farm manager Barbara Fuller said, “Every week we will fill up that bag with fresh produce. We’ve structured the CSA around salad packs so every week they will have fresh greens with complimentary fruits and vegetables.”

For those who can’t afford to purchase a share of the farm, Felsted gives them a chance to come up and volunteer at the farm in exchange for a bag of food.

“A thought that I’ve had is that maybe if people would come and work and there was food provided for their labor that would be a wonderful way to help people”, said Felsted.

Felsted also created the La Nay Foundation. As the farm becomes profitable, he plans to use the profits to provide the community with gardening classes, seminars and other projects this summer.

Clinton is passionate about being independent and producing your own food. He would like to see 100,000 greenhouses throughout the state to provide food independence during such turbulent times.

There are currently over 30 Utah CSA's on the CSA Utah website, as popularity grows and awareness is broadened each resident can have the ability to have more healthy, locally grown foods on the table daily.

Utah State University Extension has many resources for green houses, compost, and other farm/growing/raising resources available to all.
